Frequently Asked Questions
What is Ear Wax and Why do I have it?
Ear Wax is the name given to a substance which glands (the ceruminous and sebaceous glands) under the skin, in the outer ear canal, produce. It is made up from oil, sweat and dead skin cells.
The role of Ear Wax is to clean the ear and to prevent infection. It lubricates the skin as well being a natural antimicrobial and antifungal. Some people produce a wet ear wax while others produce a drier wax – this is determined by the persons genes. Some people produce a little, while others produce a lot.
The ear naturally removes ear wax with the movement of the jaw which loosens the wax from the wall of the ear canal to allow it to exit through the ear opening.
Too little or too much? Which is a problem?
Actually – both too little and too much ear wax can be problematic. Too little ear wax can result in dry itchy ears. Excessive wax can lead to a blockage, which can result in hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing/buzzing sounds) vertigo (dizziness/loss of balance sometimes with nausea) or pain. A build-up of excessive ear wax should be removed by a specially trained practitioner in order to prevent the ear canal from becoming impacted. An ear canal impacted with wax can result in a perforated or burst ear drum (Tympanic Membrane) Research now shows that long term reduced hearing can be a risk factor for the development of Dementia in later life.
What is Microsuction and why should I have it instead of trying to remove the wax myself?
Any attempts to remove ear wax yourself can be unsafe and impact on your ear health. At Causeway Clear Ears you will be treated by a Registered Nurse who has been specially trained in Microsuction and other methods for Ear Wax Removal.
Microsuction is a gentle vaccum suction method where the wax is gently sucked out of the ear canal using specialist equipment. Sometimes the wax will be removed in one or several large pieces which you can see if you wish, other times the wax travels up the suction tubing into the disposable canister.
Do you Syringe ears?
Ear Syringing is an outdated practice which is no longer recommended by NICE guidelines (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) as it can cause a perforation of the ear drum (Tympanic Membrane) However, other approved methods including Water Irrigation and Dry Tool Removal are available at Causeway Clear Ears and all treatment options will be discussed with you at your appointment.
What will happen during my clinic appointment/ home visit?
A full assessment of your ear health, your current issues and any other medical information which may be relevant will be taken. Then an examination of your ears is undertaken with an Otoscope and Microscopic Loupes which allows examination of the health of your ear under magnification. Following this, we will have a discussion with you regarding which method of ear wax removal would be the most suitable.
Sometimes a combination of the following treatments is required:
- Micro-suction
- Water Irrigation
- Dry Tool Removal
The procedure and any potential risks/side effects will be explained. You will then be asked to sign the consent form before treatment commences. Any client who cannot provide medical information and informed consent will require a family member to be present to provide this information and consent to the treatment on their behalf.
